A1C

An A1C is a blood test that tests an average of the amount of glucose in your blood over the past 2-3 months. You do not have to be fasting to have an A1C test and there are no special preparations for the test, such as special drinks. So what does an A1C tell your doctor? An A1C can tell your doctor if you are pre-diabetic, are newly diabetic or how well you are controlling your diabetes (Diagnosing diabetes, n.d.).

  • A1C of 5.7%-6.5% is pre-diabetes

  • Diabetes is diagnosed when your A1C is at 6.5% (Diagnosing diabetes, n.d).

  • Your A1C target goal will depend on multiple factors and reaching your goals will help lower your risk for complications (Living well with diabetes, 2015.)
