Cholesterol

Cholesterol is fat, called lipids, in your blood and there are several kinds of lipids. They affect your blood pressure and your blood sugar. If your blood pressure and your blood sugar are too high they your cholesterol is probably not in control. This can put you at higher risk for diabetes complications and cardiovascular complications (All about cholesterol, 2012). The fats found in your blood are

  • LDL cholesterol-bad cholesterol that blocks blood vessels.

  • HDL cholesterol- good cholesterol that removes deposits from blood vessels.

  • Triglycerides-if these are high you can be at risk for heart attack and stroke (All about cholesterol, 2012).

  • How do you treat high cholesterol?

  • Eating healthy, low fat diet

  • Physical activity

  • Quit smoking

  • Lose weight

  • Cholesterol lowering medication (All about cholesterol, 2012).

Talk to your primary care provider about what steps you need to take to lower your cholesterol if it is high.
