Checking Your Blood Sugar

Checking your blood sugar daily is very important. How many times a day depends on your doctors recommendations and your diet, activity, and medications you take. Most people check their blood sugar first thing in the morning and before meals (Checking blood glucose, n.d.).

Target Blood Sugars

  • When waking up and before meals: 80-130 mg/dl

  • 2 hours after starting a meal: below 180 mg/dl (Checking blood glucose, n.d.).            

            *Other Times to check your blood sugar

  • When you are experiencing symptoms of high or low blood sugar

  • When you have an illness especially if you are vomiting or dehydrated

  • Before, during, after physical activity

  • Before sleep (Checking blood glucose, n.d.).
