Take Care of Your Feet

Foot infections are very common hospitalizations for diabetics. These infections are risk factors for amputations. It is imperative to take care of your feet. Loss of sensation is a big reason for foot infections. Peripheral neuropathy is what leads to loss of sensation and that leads to the infections and amputations. Signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are (Craig, Strauss, Daniller &Miller, 2014).

  • Gradual loss of sensation 

  • Pain

  • Paresthesia-"pins & needles"

  • Burning

  • Aching

  • Foot ulcerations

  • Weakness in lower legs

  • Gait imbalance

  • Joint contracture (Craig, Strauss, Daniller &Miller, 2014).

Check your feet daily and use a mirror. Check between your toes and always keep your feet clean and dry.
