Diet

Good glucose control starts with meal planning and healthy eating.

  • Know how to count carbohydrates-use the Nutrition Facts label on food as a quick reference to how many grams of carbs are in that particular food

  • Choose foods from all six food groups to provide adequate nutrition: grains, vegetables, fruits, proteins, dairy and oils.

  • Look for bright colored fruits and vegetables and lean cuts of meats like chicken, turkey and fish.

  • Avoid high fat and sugary snacks

  • Use olive or canola oil instead of butter or lard to cook

  • Avoid cream based sauces

  • Bake, steam, broil or grill meats and vegetables instead of frying

  • Drink plenty of water and limit soda (Living well with diabetes, 2015)
